World Cup API

The summer after I first started working for Software For Good coincided with the World Cup. Being a die-hard soccer fan, I ended up building a real-time API for world cup matches. The full story is pretty interesting, you can read it here. The short version of the story is that I ended up building an API that made it to the front page of Hacker News, was used by thousands of people during the World Cup itself (we served many millions of requests), and learned a ton about API design and versioning, devops and handling server loads, web scraping, and other things I have put to use since then. We resurrected it during the Women's World Cup the next year. Motto of the story: side projects rock and employers that let you run with them also rock.
